Macbeth, William Shakespeare’s “Scottish Play,” has been the subject of critical speculation since its first performance. Primarily, the play has been recognized as an allusion to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Adhering to a theoretical mode of literary criticism, with the narrow focus on historical significance of the plot, has resulted in many aspects of the play being minimized or discounted entirely. Assumption of the Gunpowder Plot as having sole political significance in the play suppresses the development of alternative interpretations of details related to the perceived dangers that witches posed and the consequences of disrupting the divine monarchial order. Theoretical connections to the Gunpowder Plot should not be disregarded entirely, but rather expanded on. It is my intention to suggest that there is more to be ascertained from historical context in order to fully understand the underlying thematic elements of the play. The supernatural aspects of the play, coupled with the beliefs, practices, and decrees of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I of England, indicate that Macbeth is, more accurately, a play about witchcraft and monarchial succession. This thesis will present and examine a successive and compounding series of commonly disregarded occult elements within the play. By expanding readings of Macbeth, allowing for the interpretation of the breadth of historical allusions that the play offers, new conclusions can be drawn from the inclusion of witch belief and familiar politics.
