The introduction of the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band in the fifth generation of cellular communications (5G) and the likely move to frequencies above 100 GHz for future cellular communications (e.g. the sixth generation of cellular communications, 6G) has opened up vast spectrum that will be utilized for communication and sensing. The wide bandwidths and narrow antenna beamwidths of physically small but electrically large antenna arrays at mmWave and sub-THz frequencies will enable a variety of extremely accurate sensing applications.This dissertation focuses on position location, one such sensing application that exploits the fine temporal and spatial resolution achievable at mmWave and sub-THz signals. This thesis first provides an overview of a variety of position location algorithms in the literature. This dissertation introduces NYURay, a mmWave and sub-THz ray tracer calibrated to real-world mmWave and sub-THz measurements at 28, 73, and 140 GHz, in indoor office, outdoor, and factory environments. This thesis describes a calibration procedure with a closed-form solution that can be used to calibrate a ray tracer to directional measurements. Electrical properties of a variety of indoor and outdoor building materials, as obtained from the calibration, are also reported in this thesis. Ray tracers can be used to evaluate the performance of a variety of wireless communication algorithms and can replace actual field measurements if correctly calibrated to accurately reproduce the physical channel. In this work, NYURay was used to evaluate the performance of MAP-AT, a novel position location algorithm, by providing information on the time-of-flight (ToF) of measured multipath components. MAP-AT can determine the position of a wireless devices to centimeter-level accuracy by utilizing the angle of arrival and ToF of multipath signals arriving at a wireless receiver, in conjunction with a map of the environment. In this thesis, the performance of MAP-AT is evaluated in a variety of indoor, outdoor, and factory environments, using field measurements. MAP-AT is an active position location approach, wherein the device to be located transmits and/or receives signals. The performance of passive position location via bistatic and multistatic radar is also investigated in this thesis. Finally, this dissertation investigates the feasibility of using sub-THz signals for seeing through walls to detect hidden objects.
