In a context of increasingly restrictive immigration laws and enhanced enforcement of the nation’s borders, scholarship examining immigration and health has grown. These developments create more selective immigration criteria of who is “deserving” of admission, which constrains immigrants’ access to resources, services, and opportunities. Each year, nearly one million foreign-born, non-citizen persons complete the arduous process and are granted legal permanent residency. This raises the question about how immigration laws and processes affect the mental and physical health of lawful permanent residents. Using the 2003 New Immigrant Survey, this dissertation investigates how different aspects of the immigration process shape foreign-born, non-citizen, immigrants’ health, including exposure to stress related to the legalization process, family separation, and racial discrimination. The first empirical chapter investigates how the legalization process affects immigrants mental and physical health soon after admission to LPR. Results demonstrate that the legalization process can adversely affect immigrants’ mental health by exposing them to bureaucratic hassles such as difficulties with the LPR application, encounters with immigration, duration of the application process (i.e., visa wait times), and a prior filing history. Controlling for visa experiences partially account for legal status differences in health. The second empirical chapter examines the effects of cross-border family ties on immigrants’ health. I find that sending remittances, regardless of the recipient, negatively impacts immigrants’ mental health, while having specific relatives living abroad like a child has a strong negative relationship with immigrants’ health. Remittances mediated, but did not moderate, the relationship between family abroad and well-being. Thus, remittances are motivated by the presence of having close relatives residing abroad and thereby shapes immigrants’ mental and physical health. The third substantive chapter explores whether immigrants’ race/ethnicity and skin color shape immigrants’ perceptions of the legalization process and its consequences for health. Results reveal that race/ethnic self-identifications are more consistently associated with immigrants’ health than skin color. However, the relationship between immigrants’ experience with the legalization process varies by skin tone. The findings unveil how multiple aspects of the immigration process affect immigrants’ well-being.
