Deception, privacy, and trust are at the very heart of social interaction. In this dissertation, I take a sociotechnincal approach to explore the roles these concepts play in the everyday goals, strategies, and choices of online social interactions across various platforms and argue that deception and trust serve necessary functions in privacy and identity work when interacting with strangers and close contacts online. Three original studies serve as the foundation for this work, each providing a different entry point for homing in on the ways deception and trust are used to achieve privacy online. In Study 1, I investigate the ways everyday office workers at two universities in the Midwestern United States came to learn what they know about phishing attacks and what organizational factors inform their responses. Study 2 considers the ways online videogame players used the limited space of their gamertags in order to manage personal boundaries with others who have access, particularly other gamers in the online game space. Finally, in Study 3, I ask users of online dating sites and applications about their experiences with, and their perceptions of, catfishing and other deceptions and how they choose what information to disclose, when to disclose, and how. These three studies, each highlighting everyday contexts for online interaction—the workplace, videogaming, and online dating—impart three key insights into the foundational principles at play in social media communication. First, deception, privacy, and trust—and the tensions and trade-offs therein—are fundamental and ubiquitous elements of online interaction. Second, deception and trust are used as social workarounds to attain and maintain privacy. And third, trust and deception are essential tools in boundary and identity work.
