520 $a Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to contribute up to $1 5.7 trillion to global economy by 2030. However, this growing application of AI in contexts that have traditionally involved human agency disrupts conventional understanding of individuals’ behavior, such as an online purchase or employee productivity, drawing the attention of researchers and practitioners to pre-empt undesired deviations in such behaviors. Although such research is growing rapidly, there is still limited understanding of how and why individuals’ behavior is affected by the permeation of AI-enabled information technologies (ITs). This dissertation, organized as three essays, aims to contribute to this emerging discussion on the agency of AI-enabled ITs. In essay 1, two controlled lab experiments were conducted to investigate how AI transparency in asynchronous video interviews (AVIs) affects job applicants’ impression management (IM), stress, and interview performance. We find that non-transparent AI increased applicants’ deceptive IM and stress and lowered their interview performance. However, transparent AI alleviated these effects, leading to no significant differences in IM, stress, and interview performance compared to human evaluated AVIs. In essay 2, we utilized secondary data to examine how AI-enabled ITs may enable questionable behaviors (QBs) in the context of education. We find that platforms with AI-enabled paraphrasing tools and functionalities can significantly increase QBs in the context of education among stressed individuals. In essay 3, two randomized experiments were conducted to examine users’ reciprocity to rewards and punishments made by two different AI-enabled agents, i.e., chatbots and digital humans, instead of humans. Without reputational considerations, both chatbots and digital humans reduced positive and negative reciprocity compared to the interaction with human. However, while the highly anthropomorphic digital human evoked symmetric positive and negative reciprocity like humans, chatbots elicited significantly higher negative than positive reciprocity. With high reputational considerations, both chatbots and digital human weakened only positive reciprocity, resulting in a symmetry in positive and negative reciprocity, unlike human agents which evoked significantly higher positive than negative reciprocity. Altogether, this research advances emerging discussions on various embedded and agentic AI-enabled ITs and offers insights to organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders for the informed deployment of AI.
