The topic of this thesis revolves around the asymmetry of information and data accessibility to mapping programs such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, and OpenStreetMap in the context of the Israeli occupation of Nablus in the West Bank, asking questions about the use (or limiting) of the “digital,” to conduct urbicide, easy deployment of restrictions, and the general relationship between power, digital, and urbicide. Researchers have discussed the missing information on OpenStreetMap (Bittner 2017), while other research practitioners have revealed hidden evidence of destruction (Weizman 2017). BTselem and Forensic Architecture have collaborated to address this issue. The goals of this thesis are to shed light on the power differential between the Palestinians and Israeli settlers in the West Bank and to examine how a reality, to some, could be distorted on the digital, creating a digital smokescreen that conceals evidence and violence. I utilize four methods to answer my research questions. Starting with spatializing the archive of B’Tselem, I follow how Abujidi (Abujidi 2014) documented the checkpoints by transforming texts and raw data into maps. I follow the work of Bosselmann and Abujidi in mapping Palestinian and Israeli built-up areas in Nablus, West Bank. I follow the work of Weizman in intersecting different layers of restrictions to reveal the hidden evidence of deployment violence. I generate a topography section for the areas of study to disclose more information about hidden evidence of violence. One of the main findings in this thesis is the concept of “Digital Urbicide,” the deliberate erasure and manipulation of digital information to shape a distorted reality, emphasizing its crucial role in contributing to power differentials, spatial injustices, and normalizing occupation. The thesis contributes to understanding the impact of power differentials, information asymmetry, and digital manipulation on vulnerable populations.

520 $a في سياق الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لمدينة نابلس في الضّفّة الغربيّة، يصعب الوصول إلى البيانات الرقميّة التّي تزوّدها برامج الخرائط مثل خرائط جوجل، وأبل، وويز، أوبن ستريت مابس نتيجة عدم مطابقتها للواقع. يستفهم موضوع الرّسالة هذه الصّعوبة؛ كيف يمكّن توظيف "الرقمي" -متمثلاً بحجب البيانات الجغرافية -إسرائيل المحتلّة من القيام بجرائم الحرب الحضريّة بتسهيل فرض القيود؟ أجيب عن هذا التساؤل من خلال فهم العلاقة بين القوّة\\السّلطة والرّقمي وجرائم الحرب الحضريّة. لقد ناقش الباحثون نقص المعلومات على Open Street Maps (بيتنار ٢٠١٧)، بينما كشفت أبحاث مؤسسة العمارة الجنائيّة Forensic Architecture (Weizman 2017) بالتعاون مع بتسيلم في تحقيقاتها الجنائيّة المتعدّدة عن أدلّة مخفيّة على الدّمار. تسلّط الرّسالة الضّوء على الفارق الشّاسع بين معيشة الفلسطينيّين والمستوطنين الإسرائيليين في الضّفة الغربيّة، وتتبّع الكيفيّة التّي يمكن بها تشويه واقع ما؛ عن طريق تحريف المعلومات في العالم الرقمي، مما ينتج عنه ستار "رقمي" يخفي الأدلّة على العنف. للإجابة على الأسئلة التي ينطوي عليها بحثي، أستخدم أربعة أساليب. أبدأ من أرشيف بتسليم المتاح حيث أعمد على تمثيله ليصبح مرئياً بثلاثة أبعاد (فضائياً spatially)، عن طريق تحويل النّصوص إلى خرائط ورسومات. أبني من خلال عملي على عدد من الأعمال، منها بحث أبو جدي (٢٠١٤) بتحويل النصوص والبيانات الخام الى خرائط، وعمل بوسلمان وأبو جدي في رسم خرائط للمناطق المعمّرة من قبل الفلسطينيين، والمستوطنين الإسرائيليين في نابلس، الضفة الغربية. أتابع عمل ويزمان حيث أحقّق في اختلاف طبيعة القيود المفروضة وأركّبها في طبقات مختلفة بغية الكشف عمّا غاب عن أفقنا من أدلّة مخفية على استخدام العنف. أقوم برسم مقطع رأسي طوبوغرافي لمناطق الدراسة للكشف عن مزيد من المعلومات حول الأدلة المخفية لاستخدام العنف. إحدى أهمّ النتائج التي توصّلت إليها في هذه الرسالة هي مفهوم "القتل الرقمي"، التّي أصيغها لأصف مسح البيانات الرّقميّة المتعمّد والتّلاعب بها لتشكيل واقع مشوّه، مما يبرز إسهامها الحاسم في تدعيم الاحتلال وتبريره من خلال خلق توسيع الفارق في القوة في القوة بين الفلسطينيّين والمستوطنين الإسرائيليين. تساهم هذه الرسالة في فهم تأثير الفوارق في القوة، وعدم تماثل المعلومات، والتلاعب الرقمي على السكان الأصليين للمناطق المحتلة والرأي العام في المجتمع الدولي.
