Transnational approaches, the cultural and environmental history of war, and gender's ubiquitous but heretofore marginalized role in the larger conflict together merit fresh research and careful new interpretation. Stith is Associate Professor of History at the University of Texas at Tyler, USA. He is the author or editor of three books including Extreme Civil War: Guerrilla Warfare, Environment, and Race on the Trans-Mississippi Frontier (2016) and, as co-editor, Beyond the Quagmire: New Interpretations of the Vietnam War (2019)
