Amidst the technological advancements and increased information exchange, digital service operations and supply chains are dynamically adapting to contemporary trends. The critical need for design and optimal control of service operations and supply chains is emphasized by the threats posed by misinformation spreading on digital platforms, particularly during global events like COVID-19 pandemic, and the susceptibility of supply chains to disruptions.In response to the challenges posed by misinformation, social media platforms (SMPs) employ independent fact-checking to identify false news content. However, fact-checking typically takes around 5 days, during which false news spreads rapidly on social media. This highlights the urgency for SMPs to improve the false news identification strategies.Moreover, supply chain disruptions, such as chip shortages, resulting in an estimated $2 10 billion in lost revenue, highlight the need for resilience in supply chain management. Despite the adverse impacts, some firms view the crisis as an opportunity to capture market share. For instance, during COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, the surge in demand for video calling led to complete replacement of Microsoft's Skype with Zoom. My thesis explores various service operations and supply chain models aimed at addressing these challenges.In Chapter 2, I study fork-join (FJ) queues where each incoming job to the system is copied and sent to all its parallel servers. A job is completed when all or some of the copies are processed by servers. FJ queueing systems can capture the trade-off between speed and accuracy that commonly arises in knowledge-based service systems. I study the optimal control of "join decision" in FJ queues. A join decision determines how many copies of a job should be processed before the job leaves the system. The MDP-based dynamic join policy inspires an easy-to-compute and easy-to-implement heuristic that performs within 2% of the optimal. The heuristic helps managers to achieve a desired trade-off between speed and accuracy in FJ queues.In Chapter 3, I model the impact of regional supply disruptions on competing sup- ply chains where two firms compete for the limited backup supply. I describe generic strategies for both firms in the two stages of the game: (i) preparation, which involves in- vestment prior to a disruption in securing backup supply, and (ii) response, which involves post-disruption purchase of shared backup supply for a component whose availability has been compromised. Our game-theoretic model finds that firms can use their preparation investment to not only minimize their long-term disruption losses but also capture market shares.In Chapter 4, I examine a technology firm with a niche product in the market. Each period, the firm faces the decision of whether to launch a new product generation with the latest updates into the market or delay introduction to make further developments in R&D. Firm's niche product is a peripheral product of a multiproduct firm's business. Therefore, only the firm views the multiproduct firm as a direct competitor. I develop a dynamic programming model to analyze the firm's optimal launch and innovation investment strategies, incorporating stochastic technology improvement and a competitor firm.
