"Transit" the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another. This research aims to understand the very concept of transition as an experience and how this experience is achieved through architecture at block level, neighborhood level and city level in an urban setting. The experience is further scrutinized through the lens of ecology, geography, culture and architecture. Studying river basin behavior and function gives an ideal ground to analyze the existing interrelation and overlap of all the study parameters. The lower Mississippi basin is closely studied for its expression of transition at various fronts. The primary structure of the research revolves around how the ecological and topographical transitions along Mississippi have influenced the shaping of the built settlements and their organizations at both macro and micro level. Narrowing down to, a riverfront site in New Orleans was selected. It sits on an interesting confluence of physical, ecological, and cultural transitions that could be highlighted through architecture by means of an urban center. The site demands graphical analysis of the course of Mississippi, the floods of New Orleans, organizational history and culture of New Orleans with the given background of its ecological sensitivity. The prime objective is to re-introduce the wetlands and open up the riverfront to the city with physical and visual access. The design implements the understanding of layers of transition i.e. the ecology, topography, culture, and architecture. The design ends up being an amalgamation of different design elements that individually or collectively address each factor, thus forming "the nodal edge".
