Limited research has investigated the visual depictions of the human body that individuals are exposed to on social media platforms, with even less examining the relationship between the content of such exposures and body image and its outcomes. The present study addressed this gap by introducing a new self-report measure of body-focused content exposure on social media and examining its associations with existing measures of use of and engagement with social media and body image satisfaction. A sample of 378 undergraduates completed an anonymous online survey containing these measures. Results indicated that integration of social media into routines, as well as age and sex, predicted appearance orientation, while time on social media predicted body satisfaction. Physical appearance satisfaction did not produce any significant relationships. Importantly, an exploratory factor analysis indicated a three-factor structure of the proposed new scales assessing body-focused content exposure on social media. The new scales showed significant associations with appearance orientation, integration of social media into routines, and social and emotional connection to social media. Broadly, the body-focused content exposure scales were significant predictors in the models; however, only appearance orientation was more significantly predicted by the addition of content exposure into the model. The results partially reinforce the existing relationship between social media use and body image outcomes. Future work should investigate the implications of body-focused content exposure on other health indicators, such as exercise and eating pathology.
