This thesis, DESIGNING FOR THE SENSES: HARNESSING LIGHT, TRANSPARENCY, AND VISUAL CONNECTIVITY TO CREATE RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURE FOR THE DEAF COMMUNITY, explored the challenges of designing environments that are intuitive and accessible for the Deaf community. It demonstrated how architectural design can be adapted to better serve the Deaf community by enhancing the role of visual communication through the strategic use of light, transparency, and visual porosity within the built environment.This study addressed the failure to integrate visual communication and non-verbal cues in the traditional architectural design process resulting in spaces that are often inaccessible and unresponsive to the unique needs of Deaf individuals. The research addressed how architectural design can be enhanced to meet the unique needs of the Deaf community and leverage visual and tactile modalities that are essential for effective communication and orientation creating more equitable and accessible environments that cater to the diverse needs of all users.The main questions this thesis sought to answer were, how can the strategic application of light, transparency, and visual porosity, informed by Deafspace principles, enhance spatial navigation, communication, and inclusivity? What design principles can be applied to create environments that are accessible, intuitive, and responsive to the unique needs of this community? Hansel Bauman, working cooperatively with Gallaudet University, sought to integrate the voices and experiences of the Deaf community to create guidelines that ensure that the needs of Deaf users influence the design decisions in the built environment.The findings presented design solutions that address the research problem in Tallahassee, Florida. The method of study was the examination of precedents, typologies and design guidelines which produced a design that investigated the optimization of visual communication and spatial navigation to create a more inclusive and functional built space for Deaf users.
