In the realm of digital game-based language learning (DGBLL), a relatively small body of research has explored the effects of playing digital commercial games (i.e., video games that are not developed for educational purposes), such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), on second language (L2) pragmatics acquisition. Moreover, no DGBLL studies have examined the extent to which variables such as target-language input and willingness to communicate (WTC) during MMORPG gameplay predict language learners' L2 pragmatic competence. To fill this gap, the present study investigated the predictive power of the learner-external variable of target- language input and the learner-internal variable of L2 WTC during MMORPG gameplay via World of Warcraft (WoW) in Chinese English learners' L2 pragmatic competence in compliment responses (CRs). Intermediate Chinese English learners (N = 162) from an institution in China played WoW with American players for four consecutive weeks. The analysis of conversation tasks showed that the Chinese English learners tended to avoid accepting compliments in English on the pretest, while they preferred to employ the conventional strategy of acceptance in English on the posttest. The results of a hierarchical regression analysis revealed that target-language input and L2 WTC were significant positive predictors of the Chinese English learners' enhanced L2 pragmatic competence in CRs.
