Background: Respiratory limitations such as exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) and exaggerated inspiratory muscle work can impair performance and augment cardiovascular strain via the respiratory muscle metaboreflex. Ergogenic strategies including inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and dietary nitrate (NO3⁻) supplementation have been proposed to alleviate these constraints. Purpose: This dissertation investigated: (1) the chronic effects of flow-resistive IMT on EIB severity and cycling performance; and (2) the acute effects of NO3⁻-rich beetroot juice (BRJ) on sympathetic and hemodynamic responses to resistive breathing. Methods: Study 1 utilized a randomized controlled design in trained cyclists with EIB (n = 11). Participants were assigned to IMT (n = 7) or sham-IMT (n = 4) for 8 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention measures included pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, dyspnea, leg fatigue, and 16-km cycling time trial performance. Study 2 employed a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design (n = 17) in which participants completed high-intensity resistive breathing challenges under baseline (BASE), placebo (PLA), and BRJ conditions. Measures included plasma NO3⁻/NO2⁻, catecholamines, heart rate, blood pressure, limb blood flow (LBF), vascular resistance (LVR), respiratory and limb muscle oxygenation, dyspnea, and neuromuscular efficiency. Results: Study 1: IMT significantly improved MIP (p = 0.019) and reduced dyspnea and unpleasantness during exercise, though no significant changes in EIB severity, SMIP, cycling time, or power output were observed. Sham-IMT participants showed improvements in SMIP and time-trial metrics. Study 2: BRJ significantly elevated plasma NO3⁻/NO2⁻ (p < 0.001), confirming supplementation efficacy. However, no significant condition effects were observed for hemodynamic, vascular, ventilatory, neuromuscular, or dyspnea outcomes. All variables demonstrated significant stage-dependent increases with inspiratory loading, but BRJ did not attenuate respiratory mechanical burden, sympathetic markers, or perceived effort. Conclusion: IMT modestly enhanced inspiratory strength and perceptual outcomes without altering EIB severity or exercise performance. While BRJ effectively increased circulating NO3⁻/NO2⁻, it failed to mitigate the physiological or perceptual consequences of resistive breathing, indicating limited acute ergogenic benefit on the respiratory muscle metaboreflex.
