The integration of Virtual Reality (VR) into construction education is transforming how students engage with complex materials like Mass Timber. This thesis examines the effectiveness of VR-based instruction in improving students' understanding of mass timber specifications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Moving beyond static, document-based methods, the study evaluates how immersive VR impacts comprehension, motivation, and user experience.A mixed-methods approach compares two student groups: one learned through traditional text- and-image content, the other through a Unity-based VR simulation covering timber types, codes, and fire/moisture resistance. A retention test three weeks later assessed long-term learning. Statistical methods, including Mann-Whitney U test and Cliff's Delta, were used to analyze score differences.Qualitative feedback from surveys captured engagement, motivation, and simulator sickness. Results showed that while both methods improved knowledge, the VR group showed higher engagement and stronger retention, especially for spatial concepts like fire resistance. Simulator sickness was minimal and had no measurable impact.Overall, this study supports VR as an effective, engaging tool for teaching construction concepts, particularly sustainable materials like mass timber.
