Increased accessibility to the internet and to social media platforms has changed the way that individuals interact with each other. Previous studies have demonstrated that different aspects of social media contribute to symptoms of depression and anxiety in young adults and adults. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the correlation between fear of missing out and parental monitoring on symptoms of anxiety and depression in children aged 9 to 12 using social media. A self-determination theoretical framework helped to guide this study. Data was gathered through a questionnaire accessed via Amazon's Mturk platform and Qualtrics. Pearson Correlation and Welch's t-test analyses examined the correlation between fear of missing out and parental monitoring on symptoms of anxiety and depression in children among a random sample of parents with children in this age range. Results from this study indicated that Fear of Missing Out and parental monitoring were correlated with symptoms of anxiety and depression in this population. It was also found that, as fear of missing out and parental monitoring increased, levels of anxiety and depression also increased. This study provides insight to help those involved in the care of children to understand the importance of monitoring their child's use of social media. Moving forward, studies should consider including child self-report data, longitudinal designs to access causality, and qualitative approaches to gain right insights into the lived experiences of both children and their parents as they navigate social media.
