This thesis examines how adult Korean women persist in learning English through informal, digitally mediated Communities of Practice (CoPs). In response to limited access to formal instruction, during the COVID-19 pandemic in particular, participants engaged in self-directed learning using platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, Zoom, and Ifland. Drawing on Wenger's CoP theory, Norton's identity framework, and research on learner autonomy, this qualitative study explores how participants sustain motivation, develop learner identities, and engage with digital literacies. Data sources include semi-structured interviews, retrospective narratives, Instagram posts (approximately 1540 in total) spanning about five years, chatroom messages from a member-shared messaging platform, and follow-up interviews conducted during data analysis. Grounded theory guided the analysis of emergent patterns across multiple data types. (e.g., taking online classes and transcription challenges), digital engagement (e.g., sharing progress on Instagram and participating in Zoom-based discussions), and socially meaningful practices (e.g., peer encouragement in messaging groups and collaborative reading activities at book clubs). They used digital tools to document learning, maintain peer accountability, and participate in shared literacy practices. Persistence was linked not only to personal motivation but also to identity negotiation and community-based learning. This study contributes to understanding persistence in informal second language learning and highlights the role of digital CoPs in supporting learner autonomy and identity development beyond institutional settings. Implications are offered for language educators and program designers aiming to support long-term learner engagement in flexible and socially situated environments.
