This study examined the relationship between personality traits and social media use habits to address one aspect of the concerns regarding the impact of social media use on mental health. Grounded in the framework of applied clinical psychology, the research aimed to determine whether specific personality traits are associated with preferences for particular social media platforms, thereby offering opportunities for more targeted clinical interventions. Participants consisted of 153 adults, aged 21 and older, residing in the United States, who actively used social media and provided consent to share device-generated screen-time data. Data collection avoided reliance on self-reported use by incorporating mobile device records, enhancing validity compared to prior studies that primarily used retrospective self-report measures. The results aim to identify any significant correlations between specific personality traits and preferences for certain social media platforms, highlighting the nuanced ways in which personality influences online behavior. The findings aim to help clinicians provide more personalized treatment recommendations by considering both personality characteristics and patterns of social media use, rather than advising clients to reduce social media engagement broadly. The study contributes to the field of applied clinical psychology by expanding the understanding of the intersection between personality and digital behavior. It underscores the importance of developing individualized, evidence-based interventions for clients whose mental health is impacted by social media use.
