Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of today's most salient topics. Of the economic literature focusing on AI, much of it explores the effects on firm productivity and hiring activity that come from adopting AI, but little research has looked at AI's role in producing knowledge. This analysis contributes to the literature by exploring the covariates associated with successful AI research at the regional level, testing the relationship between a region's stock of AI knowledge and its future production of knowledge, and adding to the limited research on regional knowledge production functions using sub-state US data. A mixture of OLS, Fixed Effects, Random Effects, Poisson, and Negative Binomial models are used to evaluate these relationships. This analysis finds a positive relationship between a regional economy's existing stock of AI knowledge and the flow of new non-AI patents. For non-AI knowledge production to flourish, a regional economy needs access to the right human capital. A region with greater access to an educated and skilled workforce, either from within the region or from its regional neighbors, could expect to produce knowledge at a greater pace. If a region can concentrate researchers, clustering these inventors within their region, they may see an increase in their knowledge production. The results for the flow of new AI Patents were inconsistent and thus inconclusive. Increasing immigration, especially of skilled individuals, decreasing barriers to a tertiary education, investing in research parks, and increasing access to AI research resources are policies that could be used to bolster the United States' production of knowledge at the regional level.
