This qualitative dissertation builds on unobtrusive control theory (UCT) demonstrating how employees avoid information to remain highly identified with their organization. Through an investigation of 30 remote workers who have their productivity monitored by a surveillance software, an abductive analysis guided by the phronetic iterative approach, demonstrates connections between unobtrusive control theory (UCT) and the theory of managing uncertainty (TMU), to reveal distinct type of extra-organizational premises, within UCT to explore how participants were influenced to make decisions based on their work modality, labeled mode of work decisional premises (e.g., remote worker decisional premises). Findings also demonstrate a new target of employee identification directed toward an employee's work modality (i.e., mode of work identification), complicating scholarship on identification targets and processes. Overall, insights from this dissertation contribute to research on resistance, control, uncertainty, transparency, and identification offering practical recommendations for both organizational powerholders and remote workers on the implementation and use of virtual surveillance software.
