This thesis examines the performance and impact of digital technologies in architectural practice, through selected projects by Renzo Piano Building Workshop: The Genoa Columbo Expo '92/Porto Antico (1992/2002) and Kansai International Airport (1994), exemplary of CAD architecture; and the OōEli Complex (2020) and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (2023), exemplary of BIM architecture. Taking a case-based approach, this thesis follows the networks mobilized around each project to apprehend a larger array of actors involved in architectural production alongside architects: CAD operators, programmers, simulation consultants, acoustics engineers and others. Accounting for the wider ecology of digital practice, I combine ethnographic methods from science and technology studies while implementing digital research tools to study architectural production at large. Applying a hybridized form of what could be called "digital architectural humanities" to trace transformations across the four architectural projects under CAD and BIM, the empirical chapters explore three practices of each moment: multiplication, differentiation and reshuffling. This thesis exemplarily demonstrates how these reshape architecture's networks in service of the project itself by regulating CAD's expansion and contraction of networks, then sustaining BIM's precarious networks. Digital Dependencies makes several original contributions to knowledge, historicizing the digital in architecture, engaging with the digital technologies of practice, and proposing how digital technologies have fundamentally transformed architectural production. Moreover, it contributes novel methods in the architectural humanities for researching the current conditions of digitalized global capitalism.
