A framework for a Computerized Environment for Heuristics (CEH) is presented based on the proposed design guidelines. The CEH system can be organized and implemented by fields of specialization using data banks interconnected through Internet. A set of heuristics used in daylighting design illustrates an application of the proposed CEH.

520 # $a The nature of design is reviewed to understand the contextual environment where heuristics are used. This study comprehensively analyzes heuristics' nature, usage, methodological issues and limitations. Heuristics are examined and classified according to their morphology, structures and components. This analysis aims to contribute towards a theory of the heuristics as used in design. The results of this analysis identify the limitations of certain types of heuristics that can create unforeseen and undesirable consequences when they are used. Based on this analysis, guidelines to improve the current way of developing, distributing and using heuristics in design are formulated.
