520 # $a Today most major colleges and universities have technology infrastructures in place and are providing or developing online services for their students, educators, and administrators. Moreover, distance learning is being offered with increasing frequency via wide area networks or the Web. Nothwithstanding philosophical debates that may ensue over such a transformation of higher education, it is indisputable that technology has arrived on American campuses.
520 # $a With this surge of computer technology, incidents of abuse of campus networks are becoming more prevalent and resulting in both criminal and civil litigation. Introducing computer networks and the Internet to campus has opened a labyrinth of legal issues for higher education. This study employs a legal research methodology to examine the legal ramifications of using the current technology and attempts to ascertain the potential liability that exists for colleges and universities in providing network access.
