In the final section, I consider the inherent tension in Ramon del Valle Inclan's oeuvre, since his evocation of a mythic rural society paradoxically emerges from innovative aesthetic modes. In particular, I analyze the aesthetic evolution from his first symbolist period, in which he aims to restore a mystic order to Spanish history through the aura of art, to his late expressionist esperpentos that promote the exacerbation of the chaotic nature of modernity.

520 # $a In the first chapter, I interpret Miguel de Unamuno's intrahistoria as a philological discourse that longs for the power of the intellectual class, fostering the subordination of such social movements as socialism or regionalism to the central law of the state. I also analyze how the asystematic genre of the essay undermines the project of sacred national unity articulated on the Castilian language.
520 # $a In the second part, I provide a genealogical analysis of the concept of empire---namely, how Nineteenth Century Spain un-chronically recalls Golden Age Empire as a symbolic compensation for its lack of international hegemony. Specifically, I consider how Angel Ganivet's work depicts this spectral empire as a vanishing fiction.
520 # $a My dissertation reevaluates the reactions of the intellectual community to the late modernization of fin-de-siecle Spain. This period witnessed a radical transformation from a rural to a capitalist society, as well as severe political tensions between the autarchic parliamentary elite and new social and regionalist movements. I argue that literary and essayistic texts should be read as symbolic spaces that negotiate these conflicting power networks. Indeed, the intellectuals created the myth of an atemporal rural society as the fiction of the return to a golden age in which all tensions disappeared. Nonetheless, such ideology is finally deconstructed through the inherent tropologic instability of language.
520 # $a The central paradox that informs these literary representations is the simultaneous embrace of traditionalist ideologies and the construction of texts as modern, self-reflexive structures. Drawing on discourses that range from critical theory to historiography, I highlight the aesthetic and politic tensions that configure the ambivalent foundations of Spanish modernity.
