Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Pennsylvania, 2004.
In the developing world, where political institutions are weak, leaders play a particularly important role in bringing about or preventing change. In political science literature, however, there is little acknowledgement of the ways in which they can shape major socio-political events. The present analysis aims to bring leaders back as an important independent variable for analysis. Five case studies have been selected, each representing an important period in modern Iranian history, to demonstrate the criticality of leaders, especially in hierarchical societies. Of these, emphasis is placed on the Iranian Revolution, where the study concludes that without the interaction of three specific leaders (Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and President Jimmy Carter), the event would almost certainly not have occurred.
