Should Middle and North African (MENA) countries adopt the fashionable modern monetary policy strategy of inflation targeting (IT)? This informed and critical book contains contributions from ateam of international experts, who discuss the preconditions andconsequences of IT.Particular attention is paid to fiscal policy, capital account liberalisation and monetary transmission mechanisms. This book examines the progress by various MENA countries towards IT. Against the background of the paths taken in Europe (and the changes in financial infrastructure which were required), the authors examine how Turkey first came to IT, first informally and then formally, and how IT has worked for Turkey so far. They also consider in turn the varying experiences of Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, and debate whether, in the light of the global financial crisis, IT is in fact the appropriate strategy to adopt.
