The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the lived experiences of forensic interviewers that interview children alleging abuse and neglect. Another goal of this study was to explore subtle and non-regulated aspects of the forensic interviewing process such as interviewers' intuitions and observations of non-verbal cues that cannot be documented. Eleven of 25 eligible forensic interviewers from a Midwestern area and state participated in this study by survey and interview questions to answer the three fundamental research questions asked. The research questions were: (1) What are the perceptions of forensic interviewers of children who are reporting abuse and the information gathered during disclosure? (2) What are some subtle cues (i.e. nonverbal behaviors and responses) that forensic interviewers feel child victims exhibit in response to formal questioning that cannot be documented? and (3) How does not including subtle cues in the final report affect assessment of the case? Analysis and coding of the survey, interview questions, and audiotape transcriptions produced significant data and resulted in six themes of: (1) formal documentation of the credibility of the child's disclosure, (2) additional or improved formal interview procedures or protocols, (3) opportunities to verbally express intuitions or experiences informally and/or formally about the child's disclosure, (4) subjective omission versus objective reporting, (5) video recording of non-verbal cues during disclosures, and (6) removal of forensic interviewers and changes to the interview protocol. Subthemes also emerged from each identified theme based on information gathered from the study participants. The findings of this study support existing forensic interviewing literature and reinforced Erving Goffman's theory of dramaturgy.
