One of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century is inarguably the accelerated global warming of the Earth. With exponential increase of the world population and rapid industrialization in previously undeveloped regions, the production of greenhouse gases such as CO2 has led to its excessive accumulation in the atmosphere. This dissertation tackles on one particular technology, electrochemical CO2 reduction, with emphasis on the catalyst development for materializing this technology on a more practical scale. Electrochemical CO2 reduction has a tremendous potential not only to mitigate and close the carbon cycle from industries and agricultural practices to stop the excessive pumping of CO2 to our atmosphere, but also, coupled with other technologies such as carbon capture, the potential means to tackle the issue of excessive greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.Additionally, this dissertation also touches on a separate aspect to enable the transition to green energy by switching to ammonia as a hydrogen carrier in order to enable a clean fuel-cell technology to replace the current typical energy generation from carbon-emitting sources. The many difficulties faced by hydrogen storage can easily be solved by shifting to an alternate hydrogen carrier such as ammonia, with its worldwide availability of infrastructure due to it being one of the most common commodity chemicals traded and easy transportation and storage. To enable this, a deep discourse into two potential technologies, ammonia oxidation reaction, and thermal cracking of ammonia, were explored. Like in the first half of the thesis, this dissertation focuses primarily on the catalyst development aspect of these two technologies, summarizing the current state of the technology and different strategies developed in our research facility.
