This dissertation aims to investigate a potential merger of long and short vowels in Seoul Korean (SK) and North Kyungsang Korean (NKK) speakers and how the merger may affect tone assignments for native words and loanwords in NKK speakers. The vowel-length distinction has reportedly been lost in younger speakers of SK, resulting in a significant difference between age groups in the use of vowel duration for contrast. While the status of vowel-length distinctions in NKK is less clear, recent reports suggest a change in process among younger speakers there as well. Unlike SK, NKK also uses a tone distinction, and a long vowel is a crucial cue for determining the location of tone in Korean native words and loanwords. Therefore, the loss of long vowels could affect the assignment of a tone pattern in the production of younger speakers. In this dissertation, production and perception tests were designed to examine how SK and NKK speakers produce and perceive vowel-length contrasts based on language variety, age, and gender. The results confirmed that the vowel-length distinction merger is complete in the production of younger SK speakers and younger female NKK speakers, but a gender difference was found among younger NKK speakers. A perception test found evidence that NKK speakers used tone patterns as the primary perceptual cue to distinguish between the semantic meanings of short/long vowel-minimal pairs. A generational tonal change in loanwords was not found, as accent distribution between older and younger NKK speakers was not significantly different. A production test with non-real words provided evidence for phonetic/phonological cues to attract a high tone in the production of NKK speakers. The results reported in this dissertation suggested that the different sensitivity to vowel-length contrasts between production and perception for younger female NKK speakers may be caused by (i) a separate perceptual mental representation that has been formed by external factors like their exposure to the production of older speakers and prescriptive education, (ii) phonologically neutralizing rules in their production, or (iii) the perceptual flexibility gained by their exposure to variants from different varieties that they experienced.
