In this dissertation, I consider three different settings where social networks might influence economic outcomes. First, I study influencers on a social media platform. I model their tradeoff between earning revenue from advertising now and growing their audience in order to earn more revenue in the future. I analyze the model with data from Instagram. Social media platforms ultimately derive from our desire to interact with people, and the relationships between an influencer and their followers form a social network that is increasingly important for information consumption.Second, I study platforms competing to attract users who are linked in a social network. I have social media platforms in mind, which do not charge a price. Instead, they show ads to users. The platforms have information on the users' social network, so they can show different amounts of ads to different users depending on their network positions. I model the platforms' optimal pricing strategies, and I analyze the model with numerical simulations. I show that under some conditions, users may not switch platforms even when offered a lower "ad load" on a competing platform. The reason is network effects: users prefer to be on the same platform as their friends. Finally, I empirically analyze the effects of women entering science during World War II in a joint project. We use historical biographical data to find firms that hired female scientists to replace male scientists who left because of the war. Then, we look at longer-term outcomes for these firms. We find that firms that hired women during the war see a sustained increase in publishing over time but not in patenting. A key aspect of social networks is homophily: the desire of people to socialize with others similar to themselves. This means a lack of women in science could make it dicult or undesirable for women to enter science. The war forced a change in the social networks at scientific research firms, and that change appears to have made it easier for women to publish scientific papers.
