This thesis investigates how instruction-based, participatory art can critique the growing quantification of human experience in data-driven culture. Drawing from conceptual art and cultural theory, it examines how process-oriented practices challenge conventional notions of authorship, objectivity, and fixed meaning. Referencing the work of artists like Yoko Ono, Sol LeWitt, and Alison Knowles, as well as theorists such as Lisa Gitelman, Bruno Latour, and Claire Bishop, the project positions instruction as a tool for co-creation, ambiguity, and audience agency. In addition to theoretical analysis, the thesis presents a series of original design experiments, in which participants perform instructions that generate both personal responses and shared datasets. These works highlight how ephemeral interactions can illuminate the mechanics of datafication while inviting critical reflection on identity, participation, and embodied knowledge.Through a blend of artistic and critical inquiry, this research proposes an alternative framework for understanding data and meaning-making-one that values subjectivity, relationality, and play. By embracing ambiguity and lived experience, the work offers a counter-narrative and suggests new pathways for engaging with the systems that increasingly shape everyday life.
