This thesis explores the use of scale distortion in digital interactive installations as a strategy to evoke emotional engagement and sustain attention under today's overstimulated media environments. Drawing from surrealist traditions, such as the works of Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Giorgio de Chirico, and extending into contemporary sculptural practices of Evan Penny, Ron Mueck, and many others, this research investigates how exaggerated proportions provoke emotional responses ranging from playful bemusement to existential reflection. These emotional triggers are framed within the context of the modern attention economy, where audiences are increasingly drawn to short-form, visually rich content on digital platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Through a mixed-methods approach combining literature review, qualitative interviews, and observation-based analysis, this study examines how interactive installations utilizing real-time feedback and multisensory input can strategically guide and maintain audience attention. By integrating perceptual disruption with participatory design, the research argues that scale distortion-particularly when paired with creative technologies like motion tracking and real-time rendering- can function as a compelling tool for emotional engagement. The findings suggest new design methodologies that use visual manipulation not merely as an aesthetic device but as an experiential framework for cognitive and emotional investment.
