This research investigates the widespread consequences of limited maternal and reproductive healthcare access, particularly focusing on the intersectional effects on marginalized populations. First, an analysis of recent studies reveals the financial, physical, and mental harms faced by birth-giving people in regions lacking essential maternal services, such as hospitals, abortion clinics, birth centers, and OB/GYN providers. This evidence emphasizes the urgent need for equitable care solutions to improve maternal health outcomes, especially in underserved communities. Second, the research examines how restrictive abortion policies exacerbate these issues, limiting healthcare providers' abilities to offer comprehensive care and disproportionately impacting Black, Brown, LGBTQ+, and economically disadvantaged groups. In addition to reducing the amount of physicians willing to practice in these regions and further decreasing access while increasing the number of affected people. Additionally, the research explores design justice, an approach that challenges structural inequalities, and placemaking, a process used to improve public spaces, as a framework for designing community-centered, supportive environments that foster resilience and well-being. By referencing historical models of women-centered care, this project aims to present a community-focused approach to addressing maternal care disparities. By employing co-design and participatory research methods, this work engages the affected communities to develop inclusive, sustainable, cooperative interventions. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of maternal healthcare inequities and offers practical, community-driven solutions.
