Architectural design methodologies have consistently evolved toward more effective ways of conveying complex spatial information, particularly as traditional 2D drawings and static 3D models exhibit limitations in representing true scale and experiential attributes, especially within renovation workflows. Augmented Reality (AR) has considerable promise to resolve these issues by overlaying digital information onto the physical world, enhancing designers' perception and interaction capabilities. This thesis empirically compares the usability and user experience of tablet-based AR design systems with traditional 2D screen-based computer systems, concentrating specifically on their efficacy for iterative architectural renovation design tasks. This is an application area in which AR's potential for active design creation remains underexplored. The research used a within-subjects , counterbalanced experimental design, where all 32 participants experienced both the tablet AR and the traditional 2D computer interfaces with alternating order for kitchen renovation tasks. Key metrics include: task performance, perceived usability, and user experience, which assesses both pragmatic (task-related aspects like efficiency and effectiveness) and hedonic qualities (non-task-related aspects like novelty and enjoyment). The results showed significant superiority of tablet AR. The tablet AR modality enabled significantly faster task completion with comparable perceived usability and pragmatic quality. On the other hand, the AR system demonstrated significantly superior hedonic quality score and overall user experience scor e. Qualitative data is parallel to these quantitative results, with the 2D system valued for its familiarity and control despite specific usability flaws, while the AR system was praised for its immersive qualities and its capacity to facilitate issue-spotting; however, challenged by interaction ergonomics and physical demands. In its current situation, this research concludes that tablet AR is a potential replacement tool in architectural renovation design workflows while retaining usability and interaction challenges. The core duality of AR adoption shows the necessity for a phased adoption pathway, capitalizing on its strengths while systematically addressing its identified weaknesses.
